Beyond the Pilot's Seat at San Diego Aerospace Museum

San Diego Aerospace Museum

Today we went to the San Diego Aerospace Museum. It was surprising how many replicas and models they had. The musuem represents the history of aviation and aerospace development.

What was cool for young kids, (besides looking at all the cool planes) was the "Beyond the Pilot's Seat" exhibit in the museum. There is a small experimental aircraft that kids can sit in. It has knobs and dials children can manipulate. The foot pedals activate the rudder which actually moves. There is also a flight simulator that kids can try out. It has a model airplane mounted in a wind tunnel and kids can use a joystick and pedals to make it go up, down, and side to side. Included in the exhibit is a fuselage from a boeing 737 and coveralls to dress up in. You will also see a mock up of an air traffic control center. We spent at least a half hour in that area.

The museum offers family programs once a month. Each program lasts 45 min. and includes an activity children can take home. Call ahead or check the web for dates.

The rotunda area of the museum had static displays of various military aircraft. The helicopter on display has moving rotors and each of the aircraft have pilots in the cockpits. They have the real Apollo 9 space capsule on display as well as replicas of the Apollo space craft and space suits.

The gift shop has a great collection of videos, books, models and toys.

This is a great place to visit with young children. Here is the important info.
